Finding My Roots

Vietnam is considered my motherland yet I never had a connection with it. The more time I spent there, the less I liked the people. They're loud, pushy, and dirty (I'm not cool with nose pickers), have staring problems, and are always trying to rip me off. But the more time I spent there, the more I understood why the are the way they are. They have a different culture and they're just trying to survive.

Because I am a product of my parents, and my parents of Vietnam, I can't separate myself from the country. I may dress differently, speak another language, believe in different things, live on the other side of the world, and use a tissue to blow my nose, but I will always have the same values that my parents have that they brought with them from Vietnam. I have to continue to carry and practice the values of honor, loyalty, respect, and a good work ethic, as well as the value that my parents emphasize the most--compassion. I have never seen more suffering (in person) as I have in the past 30 days. I am grateful for my living conditions and for the people in my life.

I'm glad I visited my motherland. People say that you have to know where you came from to know where you're going. Looks like I'll be going to great places.
