When I was visiting my cousin in Geneva last year, one of the few things he talked about was poutine (his English was limited). He wanted to know if I could send him the gravy mix since he couldn't get it in Switzerland. I had no clue where to get the mix but in Canada. I told him that if I ever go, I'd buy him some. Well, I went to Montreal over Memorial Day weekend and totally forgot my conversation with him.
My boyfriend and I flew in on Saturday morning, dropped off our bags at the hotel and took the subway to Marche Jean-Talon, the largest outdoor market in Montreal. The market had fresh fruits, veggies, cheese and other goods.
We spent a lot of time walking around the neighborhoods and realized that we should just hop on one of the shared bikes.
For $7 a day, you could use the bike for 30 minutes and then put it back at one of the bike stations. There are bike lanes everywhere so I didn't have to be paranoid about being hit by a car.
We rode our bikes up Mont Royal, not knowing that it was a hilly ride.
We had poutine at La Banquise. It was good, but nowhere near as good as chili cheese fries. USA! USA!
One of the nights we had dinner at L'Express, a typical bistro. It was eh.
The subways are much cleaner than the ones in NY.
We grabbed bagels at St. Viateur.
Montreal bagels are thinner than NY bagels. I like Montreal bagels better!
Old Town Montreal is touristy. Not much to see or do there.
We hung out at Mont Royal Park and watched a bunch of hippies/bohemians/pot heads dance. I don't think it's legal to smoke marijuana in Montreal, but people are certainly open about it.
Now I don't have a picture of our lunch at Rotisserie Romados, but it was the best chicken I've ever had. EVER! The chicken is slathered with this red spicy sauce that I'd bathe in. I'd go back to Montreal just for the chicken.
On our last day we had an early lunch at Schwartz's aka the Canadian Katz.
Katz is so much better.
Before we left Montreal we swung on a set of swings that plays music every time you swing back and forth.
