Bicycling on Governor's Island

Make sure you have long legs or go with someone who has long legs when you ride a tandem bike. Because right now my crotch hurts. Today my shorter friend and I took a five minute ferry ride to Governor's Island and bicycled around the island. We've never rode tandem before and had some difficulty starting off, but we eventually we got it right.

I rode in the front.

The island has wide paths for bicyclists and pedestrians.

It's really close to Ellis Island.

No cars are allowed on the island besides the ones that belong to the employees. It's a fun escape from the city, where you can picnic underneath the shade.

No one lives on the island. This house belonged to some admiral.

Many art installations are scattered throughout the island. This one is a bullet-ridden wall from Mexico that makes a statement about the war on drugs.

Nolan Park has bright red chairs for people to lounge on. Whenever I see sets of threes, I think of my two sisters. I wish they were there sitting with me.

Another art piece. Probably the largest wind chimes I'll ever see.

This chapel is completely empty inside.

We walked in the chapel and it was pitch black besides the faint light streaming down, which cast lines on the floor.

Governor's Island has seven fortresses, this being one of them.

This fortress was turned into a prison and then a community center.

The Agony of Man. The artist created this giant piece from scrap metal. I thought it was a gorilla at first.

This art piece is supposed to resemble an eye from a bird's eye view. People can write on the walls with the pieces of chalk left in the trays.

This is supposed to be a bee's hive.
