Carnegie Hall: Renee Fleming, Susan Graham & Bradley Moore

"My dad and I cried when we heard Renee Fleming sing live," my fiance once told me. That's pretty impressive, considering the only time I made a guy cry was when I broke up with him. With my fiance's birthday coming up, I took him to see renowned operatic soprano Renee Fleming, along with mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and pianist Bradley Moore, perform at Carnegie Hall.

We made our way up to the second tier level, walking on the plush red carpet through the narrow hallway lined with black and white photographs of artists who once performed on the Hall's stage.

Each section on our floor had its own door, making me feel as if I was entering a private space reserved just for me.

Renee Fleming and Susan Graham's stunning voices enthralled the crowd, who burst into applause and screamed "brava."  They sang together mostly in French, talked about their long friendship, and provided commentary about various composers.

Bradley Moore had a solo spotlight, his fingers gracefully dancing to Claude Debussy's Claire de Lune. When I was younger I played piano and loved playing that song, although I couldn't play the difficult notes on the third page and beyond. It's one of the most beautiful songs that I could die to, literally. Like if I was going to die in a plane crash, I'd want Claire de Lune playing as the plane was going down, crashing into the earth and then exploding.

In addition to Claire de Lune, my other favorite part of the night was when Susan Graham did her solo act, playing the piano and singing Edith Piaf's La Via en Rose in French and ending the song in English. I couldn't help but have a smile on my face.

Happy birthday, Fiance!
